The said movie managed to take an average of almost $6,000/theaters on 3,603 movie houses in the US to bag another $21.5 million. Meanwhile, new comer Burlesque by Cher and Christina Aguillera takes only $6.1 million on its opening weekend taking only the 3rd spot of the chart.

Here’s the rest of the movie that made up the top 10 weekend box office chart for December 3 to 5 weekend opening:

2. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 – $16,735,000
3. Burlesque – $6,100,000
4. Unstoppable – $6,100,000

Eclipse Director David Slade on Losing Out on Directing The Wolverine to Darren Aronofsky and What's Next Read more about Eclipse Director David S

For a time, it seemed as if The Twilight Saga: Eclipse director, David Slade, would be the man to bring the X-Men's favorite son, Wolverine, back to the big screen in the sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine. After his name popped up on a short list of directors angling for the job, Slade even confessed to having met with title star Hugh Jackman to discuss the movie, which made him seem like a lock. However, as we all know now, the job of directing The Wolverine ultimately went to The Wrestler director, Darren Aronofsky, whose new film, Black Swan, is currently in theaters. So, where did that leave Slade? Back to directing commercials and spending "a lot of time reading trying to find the right thing to do next." In a recent interview with HitFix, Slade discussed the "torturous" process of choosing a project, losing out on The Wolverine to Aronofsky and what projects he has lined up next.

Slade said that finding the next project to direct is a complicated, time-consuming process.

Things aren’t as simple as choosing and opening the door and walking through it. You know, there are torturous meetings, there are friendly meetings, there are meetings that you get to the point where you’re about to start out work on something and then everything shifts and the world falls from beneath your feet. The process of getting a feature film, getting [it] green-lit unless you’re one of the very, very, very, very, very, select few people is actually very complicated. Takes a lot of your time.

Since Eclipse, Slade said that he has had many movie offers, but was really only interested in directing two of them, one of them being The Wolverine.

I must have read or been at least offered 40+ projects. I’ve gone after two. And therefore for reasons that are completely valid, those things didn’t happen. The Wolverine was like that, I had a great meeting with Hugh Jackman. We were all ready to go and then Darren Aronofsky, who has a great relationship with Hugh, showed up. You kind of feel like: "Well, the girlfriend’s come back. I can either put up a fight here or I can just let nature take its course."

Now, Slade said that he has a trio of varied projects in mind for his next feature, but he won't "commit to or announce" the movies until he is sure that he will be making one of them.

There are lots of things that are interesting but to me there is a head space you go into when you’re going after making a film. I have that head space for three films right now. One is small. It’s very interesting. It’s an amazing writer. One is large. It’s very interesting. It’s one of those kind of genre defining films that comes along every now and again. I’d be lucky to be doing it. And then one is just a really gritty, angry film which would be great for me to do as well. So, with the process of getting one of those three films, you know, has so many steps on it that I couldn’t give you.... I don’t even have a clue which one I’m going to do. All I know is I love those three projects and I’m going after them with all of my heart.

Slade summed up his moviemaking philosophy in a single sentence that seems like such an obvious formula for success that any director would do well to heed it, and yet it still seems to escape so many of them.

Get the best script and the best actors possible and then the best crew to make the best film, so that it can be as successful as possible.

Campbell's Burn Notice Movie Is Go!

This is TV-movie news, so don't get your hopes up about seeing it in the cinema. It's also slightly old news, since it was mentioned at Comic Con, but some further details and an official greenlight have now been forthcoming on the Burn Notice prequel film, centred around Bruce Campbell's ex-Navy SEAL Sam Axe.

The series itself is about Jeffrey Donovan's Michael Westen, a forcibly-retired secret agent scraping by in Miami as a private investigator. Campbell, for four years now, has been his sidekick: a Hawaiian-shirt-wearing, mojito-abusing lothario with a thing for older women, who's nevertheless handy for a spot of gunplay, martial arts, wiretapping, burglary, or whatever else this week's plot may require.

The as-yet-untitled movie, to be directed by Donovan, will fill in Axe's back-story, which we've heard about in the series but not yet seen. Specifically, it's about his last mission, taking down Colombian rebels. Jeff Wachtel, president of the USA channel's original programming, explained that, in San Diego this year "We saw Bruce Campbell as the Bruce Springsteen of Comic Con. We saw the spectacular explosive fan reaction and realized that, in Bruce, we had not only a great actor but also a pop culture icon."

Foolish not to capitalise on that, of course. The bad news though, is that the Burn Notice movie will shoot during the hiatus between seasons four and five, putting it right in the way of Campbell having any time for his mooted My Name is Bruce sequel Bruce Vs. Frankenstein. And don't even talk to us about Bubba Nosferatu. This James Bond / Number Six stuff is all well and good, but we really want to see Bruce as Elvis again...

'Alice in Wonderland' to repeat atop weekend boxoffice

Disney's 3D fantasy "Alice in Wonderland" is sure to repeat atop the domestic boxoffice this weekend despite four wide releases hitting theaters Friday.

Tim Burton's latest Johnny Depp starrer opened with $116 million last weekend, so even a 60% drop would give "Alice" a $46 million sophomore session. That scenario, though, probably is overly pessimistic.

Sunday's grosses were pinched a bit by preoccupation with the Oscar telecast, so the frame represents an easy comparison. That has some predicting that "Alice" will fall 50% or less in its second weekend. As a result, the motion-capture/live-action hybrid might climb above $200 million through its first 10 days.

Meanwhile, Universal's Matt Damon-toplined "Green Zone" appears the strongest of the weekend's market debutants.

Directed by Paul Greengrass ("The Bourne Ultimatum"), the Iraq War thriller is tracking well with a broad range of demos and could open with $14 million-$16 million. But with negative costs of at least $100 million, "Green" will have to take in plenty of green for at least a few frames if the R-rated pic is to enter the profit zone.

A recent surplus of R-rated releases doesn't help its weekend prospects, and early reviews have been mixed. So favorable word-of-mouth among opening audiences will be needed to stoke momentum for future frames.

Elsewhere, Fox Searchlight bows the Forest Whitaker starrer "Our Family Wedding," targeting urban demos. Rated PG-13, "Wedding" could stuff $11 million or more in its gift pouch. Summit Entertainment sends out Robert Pattinson starrer "Remember Me," a youth-seeking PG romantic drama, with prospects of fetching a similar sum.

Paramount opens the R-rated romantic comedy "She's Out of My League," which boasts a youthful cast and is likely to register only $8 million or so through Sunday.

Also today, Summit and Canadian partner Maple re-expand "The Hurt Locker" to 348 domestic playdates -- up from 275 last weekend -- following its big success at the Academy Awards.

But despite a victory in the oft-lucrative best picture category, "Locker" is unlikely to reap dramatic new business theatrically as the Iraq War thriller already is out on home video. The film's cume is approaching $15 million at the cusp of the frame.

Fox Searchlight's "Crazy Heart," for which topliner Jeff Bridges copped the best actor statuette Sunday, is set for roughly 1,500 engagements in an expansion from last weekend's 1,274.

Industrywide, the weekend will be compared with a $101 million 2009 frame topped by the $24.4 million bow of Disney family adventure "Race to Witch Mountain."

Another snippet for "Robin Hood" has been aired during Super Bowl XLIV. After the first ad for the film was unveiled by Yahoo! Movies on Thursday, February 4, the second TV spot for the film has come out with new footage which exposes the battle that is faced by the lead actor.

Additionally, "The Back-Up Plan" has also shared some never-before-seen scenes by debuting a Super Bowl spot. This snippet follows a couple who has a strange experience as they witness a woman delivering her baby in a pool.

"Robin Hood" centers its story on Sir Robin Hood of Locksley who tries to free his home village from tyranny and corruption in England. Starring as the titular character is Russell Crowe, with "Gladiator" Ridley Scott serving behind the lens for the upcoming movie, which eyes May 14 release date in the U.S.

"The Back-Up Plan", in the meantime, will see Zoe and Stan whose new relationship faces a real test as the leading lady has been pregnant since they start dating. Playing the couple are Jennifer Lopez and Alex O'Loughlin, while Alan Poul takes the helming duty. This movie will open wide in theaters across the U.S. on April 16.

Weekend Box Office - It’s Over. Avatar Falls To Dear John with $32.4 Million

After seven weeks and over $630 million dollars, the Avatar-domination of the domestic box office has been brought to a close. And what title finally proved powerful enough to take down the most profitable film of all time? A romantic confection called Dear John.

Title Weekend Total
1 Dear John $32,400,000 $32.4
2 Avatar $23,600,000 $630
3 From Paris w/Love $8,120,000 $8.1
4 Edge of Darkness $7,005,000 $29
5 Tooth Fairy $6,500,000 $25.3
6 When in Rome $5,504,000 $20.8
7 Book of Eli $4,835,000 $82.1
8 Crazy Heart $3,650,000 $11.1
9 Legion $3,400,000 $34.6
10 Sherlock Holmes $2,360,000 $201.5

Dear John movie image Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried (1).jpgDear John proved to be a far more formidable opponent than anyone expected, bringing in an estimated $32.4 million dollars from its 2,969 locations. That’s a per-screen average of $10,900 - good enough to help Dear John become the all-time domestic box office champ for a Super Bowl weekend release.

Avatar probably isn’t too broken up by this weekend’s results, however. On Tuesday the film crossed the final achievement off of its box office to-do list, replacing Titanic as the all-time leader at the domestic box office with an astounding $601 million earned in just 47 days. It took Titanic more than 250 days to reach its domestic high of $600.8 million back in 1998 - though when inflation, higher 3D ticket prices and estimated theatre attendance is factored in, Titanic still looks pretty unsinkable.

I’d love to be able to say that I saw this Dear John upset coming, but that would be a big lie. All signs pointed to a decent $20 million weekend for the romantic drama, Super Bowl chick-counter-programming notwithstanding.

From Paris With Love movie poster.jpgThe film, starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried, is based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks. Sparks is a big star among the Oprah Book Club set, but has not yet been able to turn that success to his advantage at the box office. Both his The Notebook and Nights in Rodanthe had opening weekends in the $15 million range. Even adding another $5 million on for Tatum’s abs and Seyfried’s “alien hotness,” that only brings Dear John up to a $20 million debut weekend - leaving plenty of room for Avatar to pull off an eighth week on top.

On Super Bowl weekend last year, director Pierre Morel pulled off his own box office surprise when his male-skewing, R-rated Taken notched a first place opening with $24.7 million. Sadly, Morel was not destined to relive that accomplishment in 2010. His latest action pic, From Paris with Love, came in third with a very disappointing $8.1 million from 2,722 play dates. Lionsgate will no doubt place some blame for the film’s failure on the East Coast blizzard, but with a Rotten Tomato score of just 34% and the downward trajectory of John Travolta’s career in play, the weather can’t be the only scapegoat.

One final point of interest in this week’s top ten: after eight weeks in very limited release, Fox Searchlight’s Crazy Heart became the first independent feature to experience an Oscar nomination bump this week. The film, featuring Best Actor contender Jeff Bridges, expanded into 819 theatres nationwide, earning an estimated $3.6 million in eighth place or a 58% increase over last week.

Even if Avatar had held on for an eighth week, its reign at the top of the box office was destined to come to a close - sooner rather than later. Next week has three strong new titles for audiences to choose from: Valentine’s Day for the ladies, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief for the teen set and the rebirth of Universal’s classic monster The Wolfman forpeople who like wolf men. All three have the potential to do well, which means that next Friday may find Avatar tasting third place for the first time in its storied career.

It's Complicated Movie Review

It’s not complicated at all, really. While living in separated harmony, Kate (Streep) and her ex-husband Jake (Baldwin) arrive in New York for their son’s graduation, get drunk, and end up in bed together for the first time in ten years.

The problem is that Jake is now married to Agness (Lake Bell), a controlling nymphette who came with one horrid brat and is desperate for another. And, with the last of their three children having only just flown the coop, Kate has never really tasted the single life.

Still, they continue the affair back in California. But will Kate fall for Jake’s lewd and lardy charms once again, or is there hope for Adam (Martin), the thoroughly nice divorcee who is redesigning her kitchen?

Quite why writer-director Meyers' script was deemed worthy of a Golden Globe nomination is a mystery, since every amusing situation – a marijuana-stoked party experience; an embarrassing webcam episode - is tempered by a moment of toe-curling mawkishness and undertones so false you could use them as dentures.

From patisserie proprietor Kate and lawyer Jake to their slappably spoilt kids and the conveniently awful Agness, everyone is rich, successful, and blissfully unaware of the real meaning of hardship.

So there’s no danger of any permanent harm being done. Except, perhaps, to the audience’s intelligence.

“That looks amazing,” drools Adam as Kate rustles up a ham and cheese toastie. “It’s called ‘croque monsieur’ – I learned how to make it in Paris ,” she informs him. Just wait til she brings out the vol-au-vents and Ferrero Rochers, sunshine.

Luckily, the more recognisable members of the cast gather up any nuggets of truth and genuine sentiment to make the patronising more palatable.

Streep is on a comedy roll after Mamma Mia! and Julie & Julia, while John Krasinski (of The Office [US] and Away We Go) lends agreeable support as Jake and Kate’s future son-in-law. Martin also goes some way to atoning for the recent atrocities he’s committed in the name of Clouseau.

And Baldwin, apparently at peace with his inexorable transformation into William Shatner, riffs pleasingly on his 30 Rock persona to flesh out what could have been a two-dimensional rogue.

Following the crime to comedy that was The Holiday, this is a marked improvement from Meyers.

But while making a few pithy observations about the mid-life condition, it's no more complicated - or profound - than a racy issue of Hello!

Movie Review - 'The Twilight Saga: New Moon'

The novel demands that Bella and Edward be kept apart, robbing the movie of the crazy love that made 'Twilight' such a guilty pleasure. And about the director ....
"This is the last time you'll ever see me," Edward Cullen says to Bella Swan. As if.
'The Twilight Saga: New Moon': Related: The Twilight Saga: New Moon review Hollywood Backlot: On the set of The Twilight Saga: New Moon The Twilight Saga: New Moon trailer The Twilight Saga: New Moon times and tickets Full The Twilight Saga: New Moon coverage More ‘Twilight’ news & buzz

Spoken early on in "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," that promise is one of the least likely to be kept in movie history. With most of that film still to unfold, and two more adaptations of Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" series in the works, the next due out as soon as next summer, the world is going to see as much of Kristen Stewart's melancholy Bella and Robert Pattinson's undead Edward as it can take. Maybe more.

In the short term, however, Edward is as good as his word and "New Moon" suffers as a result. Constrained by the plot of the novel, the film keeps the two lovers apart for quite a spell, robbing the project of the crazy-in-love energy that made "Twilight," the first entry in the series, such a guilty pleasure.

"New Moon," which has been grandly titled "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" in honor of that first episode's huge success, marks the franchise's entrance into the self-protective, don't rock the boat phase of its existence, which is inevitable but a bit of a shame.

In place of "Twilight" director Catherine Hardwicke, a filmmaker of intense, sometimes overwhelming and out of control emotionality who seemed to feel these teenage characters in her bones, "New Moon" has gone with the more polished Chris Weitz.

A smooth professional whose credits include such adaptations as "The Golden Compass" and "About a Boy," Weitz makes the vampire trains of Melissa Rosenberg's capable script run on time, but he almost seems too rational a director for this kind of project. This lack of animating madness combined with the novel's demands give much of "New Moon" a marking time quality.

Yes, I know, "New Moon's" emotional energy is supposed to come through Bella's putative attachment to newly buff best friend Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner). But though audiences gasp when Jacob uses his shirt to staunch Bella's blood (don't ask) and reveals a torso that would make Charles Atlas swoon, the connection between these two is so self-evidently non-romantic that it turns out not to be much of a diversion.

More interesting is Jacob's discovery that as a member of the fierce Quileute tribe he is prone to turning into an exceptionally large wolf at a moment's notice, a wolf whose main objective in life is to safeguard humans from vampires. In addition to pining for Edward, Bella suddenly finds herself in the middle of age-old and bitter enmities. This is one hard-luck young woman.

Before all this can happen, however, Edward has to break up with Bella. It's not like you can't see this coming, what with all the bickering these two do about whether she should be changed into a vampire, with Bella in the affirmative and Edward, worried, it seems, about her immortal soul, preferring she stay in human form.

Finally, weary of having family gatherings turn into howling crises whenever Bella gets a paper cut, Edward tells Bella he and his clan will be leaving town and see her no more. Given everything that passed between them in the previous film, this is a wildly unconvincing moment, but Bella is devastated and proceeds to spend much of her high school senior year sitting in her room watching the weather change.

At a certain point, Bella realizes that should she get into trouble, Edward will appear to her, much like a Bernadette of Lourdes-type glowing vision, offering sound advice (what a guy). This turns her into something of an adrenaline junkie, courting disaster after disaster just for a glimpse of the one that got away.

All this gets to be so troublesome and confusing that Edward decides to make a dramatic and possibly life-changing appearance before the Volturi and their minions, the closest thing vampires have to a they-who-must-be-obeyed ruling class. These folks are so powerful, they are played by high-profile actors like Michael Sheen and Dakota Fanning. As Jimmy Durante might have said, where vampires are concerned, everybody wants to get into the act.

Cate Blanchett: I'm Not Cautious With My Career Choices

For the past few years, Cate Blanchett has been busy performing and directing as well as serving as co-artistic director for countless plays in Sydney, Australia -- all while raising three boys with her husband, playwright Andrew Upton. The self-proclaimed "theater geek" is now taking on the challenging role of Blanche DuBois in Tennessee William's 'A Streetcar Named Desire.' Blanchett, 40, opened up to Vogue about her connection to theater and her surprisingly stable family life.

On the importance of theater: "In the wake of everything that's happened in the world in the last eighteen months, we're thinking about what we've lost. So much of the play is about the death of poetry and idealism and hope -- the fine, delicate things in our lives, the intangible, ephemeral things in our lives -- which theater actually represents, doesn't it? It's ephemeral by its very nature. If you're not there, you miss it. It's gone."

On career choices: "I'm not very cautious or careful. It's always been more about having a variety of experiences than any planned trajectory...I think that in a way, projects choose you."

On the stability that staying semi-put and working regular hours has given their three boys: "'There are so few experiences in our manicured, nanny-stated existence that have the quality of circus. Theater still does." And so, when the boys aren't playing with friends, they can usually be found playing backstage. "They're always engaged in the family business, so to speak.'"

On her relationship with her husband: "We do live in each others' pockets a bit, but that feels natural. It doesn't feel cramped in there at all.

Why 2012? What the Mayans Predicted

2012 - 29Raise the alarm - It's the end of the world as we know it.To understand the significance of the year 2012, you need to understand the Mesoamerican Long Count Calendar. To understand the Mesoamerican long count calendar, you're going to need to pay attention.

Ready? Here goes.

The Long Count Calendar was used by many Mesoamerican cultures in pre-Columbian America, including the Mayans. The Long Count set its "year zero" at a point in the past marking the end of the previous world and the beginning of the current one.

Many Mayan inscriptions have the count shifting to a higher order after 13 baktuns (there's 144,000 days in a baktun, in case you didn't know). Today, the most widely accepted correlations of the end of the thirteenth baktun, or Mayan date 13.0.0.0.0, with the Western calendar are either December 21 or December 23, 2012.

Even before the dating issue was settled, the early Mayanist and astronomer Maud Worcester Makemson had written in 1957 that "the completion of a Great Period of 13 baktuns would have been of the utmost significance to the Maya".

After the correct date was determined, the anthropologist Munro S. Edmonson added that "there appears to be a strong likelihood that the eral calendar, like the year calendar, was motivated by a long-range astronomical prediction, one that made a correct solsticial forecast 2,367 years into the future in 355 B.C.".

In layman's terms, this means the Maya used a calendar that had an end date of December 21st or 23rd 2012 based on a long-range astronomical prediction that something big is going to happen when that time's up.

2012 - 27Surf's Up Dude!In 1966, Maya expert Michael D. Coe claimed that "there is a suggestion that Armageddon would overtake the degenerate peoples of the world and all creation on the final day of the thirteenth baktun when the Great Cycle of the Long Count reaches completion."

Coe's apocalyptic connotations were accepted by other scholars through the early 1990s. But more recent academic scholars have specifically disputed the apocalyptic interpretation of the Long Count calendar end-date, saying instead that it would be a cause for celebration but that the cycle would continue uninterrupted by any cataclysmic event.

So depending on which camp you're in, upon completion of the thirteenth baktun, we'll either run round like headless chickens, screaming in panic as the world crumbles around us, or we'll have a jolly good knees up and party like it's 199.....er....2012.

"Trust" films at Dexter High School: a report from the scene

The crew working on the feature film "Trust" — directed by David Schwimmer and starring Clive Owen and Catherine Keener — spent their first of four scheduled days shooting at Dexter High School on Tuesday.

The film tells the story of a young girl who becomes a victim of an online predator, and the emotional fallout that results. While the Dexter High film set is closed to press, DHS Principal William "Kit" Moran responded to e-mail questions from AnnArbor.com about the crew's first day on site.

Q: What time did the film crew arrive to start work this morning?
A: Bright and early at 6:30 a.m.

Q: Approximately how big is the film crew?
A: About 100.

Q: What parts of the school have they been working in today (Tuesday)?
A: The exterior by our flag pole, the courtyard, and an interior classroom.

Q: What kind of shots/scenes have they worked on thus far?
A: The kids being dropped off at school, a scene where the young girl is escorted out by the police (she's not the one in trouble) and a scene in a classroom where she is pulled from class.

Q: Is the production company paying for the use of the school? If yes, how much?
A: $1000/day.

Q: How many students were part of the filming?
A: Probably 50+ extras.

Q: How have students responded to the film crew being in their school today?
A: They are incredibly excited. It has been a ball.

Q: Have you been sitting in on most of the filming? What were your impressions of the process?
A: I've been running a high school and monitoring movies. A crazy day. The crew is fantastic and appreciative that we allowed them the access we did.

Q: How much longer will the film crew be working today (Tuesday)?
A: They work a solid 12 hours. Finish tonight at 7:20 p.m.

Q: Were either Clive Owen or Catherine Keener on set today?
A: No. I don't think they'll be here at all.

Q: Did things generally go smoothly and as planned, or did any problems arise?
A: Zero problems, knock on wood!

Q: Did the crew use the cafeteria to break for lunch, or position themselves elsewhere?
A: They ate lunch in our band room. It all worked.

New Trailer for A Christmas Carol

It has only been two weeks since the last trailer, which I had originally written about at the time, and already Disney has released a second official trailer
for the Robert Zemeckis-directed “A Christmas Carol”. Just like the previous one, this trailer doesn’t show much of Jim Carrey either, recutting some of what we’ve already seen while expanding on other parts, but it does reveal CG that is used to great effect. Even though it might re-orient the classic novel by Charles Dickens toward more of an action film, this adaptation has the kind of adrenaline rush that a lot of good CG is known for, the kind that would be almost impossible to do with live action because everything on screen practically breaks the laws of physics.

You can watch an HD versions of the trailer on Apple’s official site. The film will be coming to theaters just in time for Halloween on November 6th, 2009.

Hot new movies in November: 'Twilight: New Moon,' '2012' and 'A Christmas Carol'

twilight 3.jpg Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen, left, and Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan in "The Twilight Saga: New Moon."Vampires, Armageddon and humbug: Name something these three things have in common.

Usually, the correct answer is nothing. But this month they do.

All three will invade theaters in hotly anticipated films opening in November.

Perhaps none more so than "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" which, if you'll pardon the awful pun, has its fans all moony and howling for its arrival. The second chapter of the vampire/teen girl/werewolf love-triangle soap-opera saga -- which has turned Grand Rapids-born actor Taylor Lautner into a megastar -- debuts in less than three weeks, so the hype frenzy is beginning to reach its apex.

"Moon" almost certainly will join end-of-the-world action extravaganza "2012" and the latest version of "A Christmas Carol" at the top of the box office charts this month.

Here's what to expect from this blockbuster trio (and other flicks on the November schedule):

"The Twilight Saga: New Moon" (PG-13)

The plot: In a nutshell, the sequel to "Twilight" finds teenager Bella's (Kristen Stewart) relationship with sparkly vampire Edward (Robert Pattinson) hitting the skids. Heartbroken, she turns to Jacob (Lautner) who turns out to be a shapeshifting wolf/boy. She sure can pick 'em, can't she?

The hype: It's deafening. The shrieking of the series' legion of female fans, that is. Some of this is fueled by the trailers and posters for the film, which have us believing that Lautner -- who had only three scenes in "Twilight" and has a much more substantial role here, physically and script-wise -- may be shirtless for most of the movie. Chris Weitz ("The Golden Compass") took over directing duties after Catherine Hardwicke helmed the first one. "Moon" is the second of four films in the franchise based on Stephenie Meyer's gazillion-selling series of novels. Expect "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" roughly a year from now.

Opening: Nov. 20

"2012" (PG-13)

The plot: Some prognosticators believe the world will end in 2012. This does not bode well for Earth or its inhabitants, and the planet doth crumbleth.

The hype: Director Roland Emmerich has wrecked CGI landscapes before in "The Day After Tomorrow" and "Independence Day," but "2012" might be his largest-scale smiting of scenery yet. Somewhere amid the earthquakey carnage is an all-star cast, including John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Danny Glover, Woody Harrelson, Thandie Newton and Chiwetel Ejiofor. One assumes the biggest names from this bunch will play the folks who survive the longest.

Opening: Nov. 13

"A Christmas Carol" (PG)

The plot: Charles Dickens, yada yada yada, Scrooge, etc. etc., humbug and Tiny Tim, you know. If you're not familiar with the classic story of a Christmas curmudgeon's comeuppance/change of heart by now ....

The hype: Filmmaker Robert Zemeckis uses his trademark motion-capture technique ("The Polar Express," "Beowulf") to turn Jim Carrey into several incarnations of Scrooge, not to mention the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Future. Some have deemed Zemeckis' neo-realist animation style weird and creepy, but the results are admirable technical achievements. "Carol" will be presented on 2D, 3D and 3D IMAX screens -- quite possibly the only reason to see the umpteenth version of the same story. If it's even half as impressive as the 3D IMAX version of "Beowulf," it will be quite a spectacle.

Opening: Friday

In some ways, the film isn't exactly what we may be expecting, according to Grand Rapids Press film critic John Serba, who discusses it and new DVD releases with sidekick/producer Cory Olsen. Give it a listen:
