Anupama Chopra reviews: Cop Out

Cast: Bruce Willis, Tracy Morgan, Juan Carlos Hernández and Cory Fernandez
Director: Kevin Smith

The Bruce Willis-Tracy Morgan comedy Cop Out is a film so soul-suckingly bad, that stealing a line from the late, great critic Gene Siskel, you are forced to ask: "is this film more interesting than a documentary of the same actors having lunch?"

Kevin Smith, who for the first time is directing material that he has not written, is ostensibly paying tribute here to the great buddy cop movies such as the Lethal Weapon series or 48 Hrs. But this homage has none of the excitement or humour of those films. Cop Out is quite literally a cop out.

Willis, who is on auto-pilot because he has played this role so many times, is once again, the wise-cracking sardonic, kick-ass cop. Morgan is his clueless, bumbling, over-dramatic partner. The two are constantly messing up but eventually they redeem themselves by nabbing a major Mexican gangster and overthrowing his drug operation.

The script by Robb and Mark Cullen strains so hard for laughs, it snaps. There is a lot of swearing and potty jokes. But the lines are lame and clichéd. There isn’t one moment that surprises you.

Scathing reviews greeted Cop Out after its US release, which prompted Kevin Smith to declare that he wasn’t going to let critics watch his films for free ever again. He ranted against critics, saying: "It’s called Cop Out; that sound like a very ambitious title to you? You REALLY wanna shit in the mouth of a flick that so OBVIOUSLY strived for nothing more than laughs."

Well, the trouble is that Cop Out doesn’t even deliver those. I smiled may be twice while watching this exhaustingly bad movie. Steer clear!
