Let The Right One In Movie Review

Let The Right One In

Let The Right One In (Låt den rätte komma in) comes trailing plaudits; a firm festival favourite, it was in many critics' top tens last year. This worries me; could it possibly live up to the hype?

Well, the answer is a resounding yes. The film, based on the best-selling novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist, is beautifully shot, lit and framed, featuring completely believable performances from its two young leads; its also an incredibly original take on vampire mythology, and, at its heart, despite the violence and horror, is a tender romance and coming of age story.

12-year-old Oskar (Hedebrant) is a lonely latch-key kid with a terrible Plantaganet hairstyle living in a gloomy suburb in early eighties Stockholm. Oscar is bullied, casually and constantly, at school - his teachers and divorced parents seem entirely oblivious - and he spends much of his time reading about murder and fantasising about revenge. One day some new people move into the flat next door. They arrive at night, all their possessions in one cab, and immediately tape cardboard over the windows. The man, Hakan (Ragnar) goes out, carrying a case full of strange equipment, accosts a stranger, drugs him, strings him up and slits his throat, draining his blood into a jerry can; in the middle of the process, though, he is interrupted by a large poodle and its owner, out for a walk.

Over the next few weeks, a number of people mysteriously disappear, and Oskar makes friends with the mysterious girl next door. Eli (Leandersson) doesn't seem to feel the cold, only comes out at night, doesn't go to school. But Oskar is so happy to have a friend that he doesn't care. Eli cares about him, and Oskar blooms - he learns Morse code so they can speak to each other through the thin adjoining walls of their flats, lends her his Rubik's Cube, and takes her advice to stand up to the bullies at school. Hakan is jealous of their growing intimacy; as he ages he is no longer able to kill with swift efficiency, and is caught by the police. In the meantime, Eli has been seen killing, and the friends of the drunk she murdered are determined to hunt her down.

It is completely true to say that I have never seen a film like Let The Right One In. Its like Buffy The Vampire Slayer crossed with a Mike Leigh [more Ken Loach, I'd say] film. The dull mundanity of Oskar's life, his acceptance of his depressingly narrow world - this is the true horror; ironically he loves Eli because she treats him like a human. She in turn only does what she must, determinedly resisting the urge to bite down on Oskar, even when he, in a misguided romantic gesture, cuts his hand for them to mix their blood. Unlike the toothless, twee Twilight, Let The Right One In does not present vampires as creatures of preternatural beauty. Eli is often unwashed, with greasy hair; she's also an extremely messy eater. Its actually Oskar, despite his silly hairdo, who looks like a blond cherub.

The title refers to the belief that a vampire must be invited in order to enter a home, but also to the fact that Eli and Oskar let each other into their hearts and lives. They are the right ones for each other. The film sticks to Bram Stoker's established vampire lore for the most part - they don't like sunlight (no sparkly nonsense here!), don't eat human food, etc with only one new idea. Cats absolutely hate vampires; this antipathy is used to very amusing effect in one scene.

Holes can be picked - why doesn't Eli feed on junkies and the homeless, people who won't be missed? why does she live such a grim life when she could pretty much live however she wants? why doesn't she turn Oskar? - but this is an immensely effective and oddly beautiful horror film and a sweet, touching romance. With decapitations. One to watch.

Top 10 Impressive Car Racing Movies

Hot on the heels of 'Fast and Furious' theatrical release, Aceshowbiz compiles the top ten list of car racing movies, presenting films from comedic 'The Cannonball Run' to bloody 'Death Race'.

See larger image
Craving for the sound of revving engines and metal clashing? Or simply having the need for speed? Now, you definitely don't have go to the race track since this Friday, April 3, director Justin Lin presents his latest car racing movie into U.S. theaters with the fourth installment of "The Fast and the Furious" series, "Fast and Furious".

Throughout the years, Hollywood has produced various kinds of car racing movies, bringing to big screen heart-pumping actions in both the race track as well as the plain street. While some classic car racing movies pave the way for the modern ones and still are worth revisiting, the technology in filming evolves to the better and so does the action behind four-wheels. Nowadays, filmmakers are competing to lay in the open more and more intricate stunts in feature films no one imagines could be done.

In commemoration of the impressive car race stunts presented in many tire-burning films, AceShowbiz assembles the list of top ten car racing movies from the classic ones to the most recent. While most of the movies listed are Hollywood films, three of them are internationally-produced. With that said and as Darrell Cartrip put it in "Cars", "Boogity Boogity Boogity! Let's go racin'!"

'A Nightmare on Elm Street' Remake Cast Its New Freddy Krueger

'Watchmen' star Jackie Earle Haley has come aboard the reimagination project of 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' as the new razor-gloved Freddy Krueger.

Jackie Earle Haley
Jackie Earle Haley moves on from being an inkblots-masked hero in "Watchmen" to portraying an iconic killer in "A Nightmare on Elm Street" remake. Variety has reported that the Academy Award-nominated actor will take on the villainous role of Freddy Krueger, who was originally made famous by Robert Englund.

"Looking at his performance in 'Watchmen,' here's a guy playing a character under a mask yet you feel tremendous empathy for him," director Samuel Bayer said of what Haley can contribute to the movie. "And in Nightmare, he is going to be under prosthetic make-up. You have to feel something for the character. The greatest villains are multi-dimensional and I think he will bring that to the character."

The 47-year-old will be joining the project as the serial killer known for his burned face, his razor glove and his red-and-green sweater, when the remake begins lensing May 5 in Chicago. The confirmation of Haley casting, in addition, puts off another Krueger casting rumor which placed Billy Bob Thornton in the potential seat.

"A Nightmare on Elm Street" is a reboot of Wes Craven's 1984 horror classic, centering on a serial killer who haunts teenagers in their dreams and kills them while they are fast asleep. Written by Wesley Strick, it will have Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form serving as producers along with John Rickard. Music video director Samuel Bayer has been tapped to helm the project.

Sheen Laughing Off Baby Health Scare Story

New dad Charlie Sheen has dismissed reports one of his twin boys is battling a heart condition in hospital - the infant is just undersized.

The reports suggested little Max, who was born last month, had been taken to a Los Angeles-area hospital, but Sheen insists there's not a lot wrong with the twin.

A publicist explains, "He (Max) has not gained the weight necessary to leave the hospital. Max is expected to reach the weight requirement shortly and will join his brother at home... Both Bob and Max are fine."

And Sheen is turning the reported scare into a joke, telling news show Extra, "The weight issue is very common among infants who were born before reaching full term. I know a lot of people are not fond of hospital food; I just didn't realise that they started so young."

Max and his brother Bob were born two weeks premature.

Nikki Reed Rumored Secretly Dating 'Twilight' Co-Star Robert Pattinson

"Twilight" co-stars Nikki Reed and Robert Pattinson have sparked rumors of them dating after they are said getting close to each other on and off the set of "The Twilight Saga's New Moon".

New rumor has emerged by the hour that "Twilight" co-stars Nikki Reed and Robert Pattinson are secretly dating. According to Lainey Gossip, which is the first to report that matter, the twosome has been spotted spending some quality time together on and off the set of "The Twilight Saga's New Moon" in Vancouver, Canada.

Nikki, still according to Lainey Gossip, hung up with Robert at his place on Sunday, April 29. Later that evening they hooked up again. They attended a Juno Awards after party with the companion of fellow "Twilight" co-star Kristen Stewart and her actor boyfriend Michael Angarano.

During the bash, Nikki and Robert "spent much of the time talking to each other, heads bent close together," a source tells Lainey Gossip. At the end of the night, "Kristen and Michael hopped in a cab, and Nikki and Rob walked further up the block...arms wrapped around each other on their way home." The source adds further, "She stayed with him overnight, was supposed to be back in L.A. on Monday....But never showed."

There hasn't been confirmation nor denial from Nikki or Robert regarding the dating claim. Besides, there is also no obvious evidence of them spending time together at the particular date and event.

Nikki Reed, Robert Pattinson, and Kristen Stewart currently are in Vancouver for the filming of the highly anticipated "The Twilight Saga's New Moon." The "Twilight" sequel will be released in U.S. theaters on November 20 later this year.

The old picture of Robert Pattinson captured during his younger years when he worked as a model and before claiming his international fame for starring as Edward Cullen in "Twilight" has been made public by Star Magazine. The snap reportedly was done as part of a photo shoot, taking place in London back in 2001, for the South China Morning Post newspaper's weekend magazine.

In the picture, shirtless Robert is seen wearing retro-style Miu Miu swimwear. He finishes his look with a pair of black socks and black-and-white shoes. He poses with British model Lucy Flower.

"Robert was such a shy, reserved little boy back then, I never would have thought he had that kind of superstardom ahead of him," Lucy shares her thought of the photo shoot session she had with Robert who has since become ladies' man. "Also, I don't believe he was very comfortable with the outfit he had to wear and the fact that he was shirtless. So it's not surprising that he was so quiet and seemed so nervous that day."

The reported shot of Robert is available to be seen on Star Magazine.

Robert Pattinson himself has previously told British magazine Closer that before becoming an actor he used to be a model from the age of 12. Unfortunately, he lost the job when he was 16 years old because he started to look too manly. "When I first started I was quite tall and looked like a girl, so I got lots of jobs, because it was during that period where the androgynous look was cool," said the British heartthrob. "Then, I guess, I became too much of a guy, so I never got any more jobs. I had the most unsuccessful modeling career."

Moving on after Chris Brown assaulted her back in February, Rihanna has thrown a secret celebration at Giorgio's restaurant in Los Angeles on Sunday, March 29, Radar Online reported. According to the site, the Barbadian songstress was joined at the party by some of her girlfriends and a few members of her record label, all of whom offered a number of toasts, one of which was for her alleged split from Chris.

"People close to Rihanna have drilled it into her head that if she stays with Chris her career will be over," so said a source. "At the dinner party there were about 10 toasts made, including one to the fact she's about to land the cover of a major fashion magazine."

During the same party, Rihanna's friends reportedly also congratulated her on the success of her hit single "Disturbia" which has just gone triple platinum. They also toasted her for being "close to landing" a film role. "People told fun stories about Ri at the party," the source told Radar Online, adding that something "big" is in the works and will be announced shortly. No comment has been offered by Rihanna or her camp regarding the report.

In related news, Rihanna has been photographed walking through Honolulu airport on Wednesday, April 1. During the occasion, she was spotted sporting a new hairstyle. Celebrity Mania has the particular snap of the singer on its website. Meanwhile, People magazine cited a source as informing Rihanna has been staying at a hotel on the Hawaiian island of Oahu during the getaway.

'Sex and the City 2' Makes an Appointment for 2010

Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema are set to bring Carrie Bradshaw and friends back in the big screen when the sequel to box office hit 'Sex and the City' hits theaters in summer 2010.

"Sex and the City 2" has locked down a U.S. theatrical release date. With Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon signing up for the project, Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema set the sequel to 2008 dramedy "Sex and the City" in the May 28, 2010 slot.

The end of May date places the sequel in the same slot the first big screen adaptation of HBO series "Sex and the City" opened in 2008. Over the May 28-30 weekend, it is listed to be in competition with Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton-starring action fantasy "Prince of Persia: Sands of Time".

Aside from the fact that all four of the original actresses have agreed to reprise their roles in the sequel, "Sex and the City 2" will have director/writer Michael Patrick King once again taking the responsibility behind the camera. However, many details circulating around the sequel's story still remain unconfirmed.

Previously, it has been reported that the film's star Sarah Jessica Parker has dished out the possibility of Carrie dealing with motherhood in the sequel. The actress said at the time, "[Motherhood] doesn't seem as if that's going to be a choice she'll make. It feels a little bit manipulative to toss that into the mix because she seems so pointed in a different direction."

Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen

Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen

The robots in disguise return for a second dose of mechanical carnage this summer in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Set for release on the day marking the 25th anniversary of Transformers, director Michael Bay and executive producer Steven Spielberg team up again following the massive global success of Transformers in 2007. They reignited interest in the much-loved franchise once confined to 2-D animation by pumping $150 million into a live action spectacular featuring eye-popping CGI. A box office haul of more than $700 million worldwide later means the robots in disguise will be back in June in an even more action packed cinematic event.

Bay has attempted to be tight-lipped over plot details for Transfomers: Revenge of the Fallen, but details are slowly coming out with the release of the first trailers and a comic book series in the States. “The Fallen” of the title refers to both Megatron being taken out of action in the first movie as well as a new Decepticon character called The Fallen featured in the initial trailers battling with Optimus Prime. Megatron is said to make a re-appearance after being awakened by Scorponok’s spark, most likely transforming into a tank in reference to his upgraded Galvatron form most famously seen in the 1986 animated movie. These two main villains will be joined by Starscream who returns to Cybertron to assume command of the Decepticons and lead a force to capture Sam Witwicky (LaBeouf) who has learnt secrets of the origins of the Transformers on Earth. Huge battles and use of the Egyptian pyramids suggests there will be an air of mystery in this sequel.

Action is promised from the start, unlike the slow burning first hour of Transformers, giving helmer Bay the chance to let his flamboyant direction run wild. The a Cloverfield-esque trailers show scenes of destruction as the Decepticons attack Earth while the humans shout a lot and look bewildered by all the robotic mayhem going on around them. The cast of Transformers returns, including Shia Labeouf, Megan Fox and Matthew Marsden, however there are numerous Transformers making a debut appearance in this live action version building on the select few seen in 2007. One fan favourite given a big screen makeover is Soundwave, here re-imagined as a satellite rather than his traditional tape recorder. The Constructicons will also be making an appearance as seven robots join to form a giant robot, although original Constructicons Bonecrusher and Devastator who featured in the first movie will not be part of the group. Jazz will also return in a new form along with others including Bumblebee, Ironhide, Sideswipe, Scorponok, Barricade and Sideways to make up about 40 transformers in the whole movie.

Fans of the original cartoon will be relived to hear that the original score will be introduced after being left out in 2007 to many complaints from the audience and many scenes have been shot in IMAX format to provide maximum impact from the explosive action scenes. A lot is riding on Revenge of the Fallen as it is expected the Autobots will be pushed into a dire situation ahead of an expected third movie to complete a trilogy and perhaps feature Unicron. An exciting prospect which Bay seems intent to oversee himself – he decided against making a movie before this one in case someone else took over - and, by the look of the trailers so far, he is set on delivering effects-laden epics.

Fresh 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' Production Stills Emerge

Megan Fox laying down on white sand and Shia LaBeouf standing in front of a pyramid are among the newly-released promo photos for 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen'.

See larger image
Four new high quality pictures from "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" have been brought forth. Posted by MeganFox.net, the production stills uncover new images displaying four of the "Transformers" sequel stars, Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel and Tyrese Gibson.

One of the fresh photos gives out Fox laying on the ground while watching something above her head, while another one shows LaBeouf standing tall in front of a pyramid. Additionally, each of the remaining two exhibits all four actors running away from massive explosion and two military personnel guarding a control station of some kind. Meanwhile, an on-set pic of LaBeouf discussing something with director Michael Bay can be obtained via MeganFox.net.

Set a year after the end of the hit 2007 "Transformers", "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" follows Sam Witwicky and Mikaela Banes as they become the target of attack by Decepticons due to Sam's knowledge over the origins of the Transformers and their ancient history on Earth. Battling the Decepticons' effort to capture Sam, Autobots unite with U.S. military and an international coalition to fight back the villains' attack.

Coming from director Michael Bay and the screenwriter team, Ehren Kruger, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the action fantasy movie sees Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox as Sam and Mikaela respectively. The two are joined by Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, John Turturro, Isabel Lucas, Rainn Wilson and others in the cast ensemble. The movie has been pushed forward to see a June 24 U.S. release.

No Howard Stark Role for Tim Robbins in 'Iron Man 2'

Tim Robbins

Contrary to the earlier speculation, Tim Robbins mentions that there is no truth behind the rumor of him filling the shoes of Tony Stark's father, Howard Stark, in 'Iron Man' sequel.
Despite the percolating rumor, "Iron Man 2" apparently won't see Tim Robbins playing Tony Stark's father, Howard Stark. In an interview with ReelTalk recently, the 50-year-old actor indicated that he won't be seen as the founder of Stark Industries in the "Iron Man" sequel, saying "That was an Internet rumor. Can't trust those Internets."

Back in December 2008, Latino Review has come up with a scoop that Robbins is going to replace Gerard Sanders, the actor who plays the character in the first film. The site moreover claimed that the actor will be seen in an important flashback sequence which will set up the "The Avengers" and "The First Avenger: Captain America" films.

To be directed by Jon Favreau, "Iron Man 2" has "Tropic Thunder" co-scribbler Justin Theroux attached to pen the story. Seeing the return of Robert Downey Jr. as the superhero in armored iron suit, the sequel picks up Don Cheadle in place of Terrence Howard's Colonel James 'Rhodey' Rhodes. This Marvel adaptation is scheduled to be released in U.S. theaters on May 7, 2010.

An Academy Award-winning actor, Tim Robbins is known for his performances in "The Shawshank Redemption" and "Mystic River". Since landing a role in 1984 "Toy Soldiers", he has appeared in multiple feature films, including "Dead Man Walking", "Cradle Will Rock" and "War of the Worlds". He was last seen starring as Loris Harrow in "City of Ember".

Chris Pine Shares Truth Behind 'Green Lantern' Casting Rumor

The new James T. Kirk in 'Star Trek', Chris Pine, admits that he has met 'Green Lantern' casting director and executive producer, but denies having been offered a part.

Becoming the center of conflicting "Green Lantern" rumors, Chris Pine finally set the record straight. Talking to MTV News, the star of the much awaited "Star Trek" put the brake on further speculation by confessing that discussions have indeed taken place, but no offer has been thrown.

"No, I had a meeting with [casting director] Pam Dixon and [executive producer] Donald De Line, but a meeting was all it was," the 28-year-old explained. Furthermore, the Jake Hardin of "Just My Luck" insisted that he never got the offer to play Hal Jordan, saying "I have not been offered squat. I do not have the part and haven't read a script."

While many would love to land a superhero role, Pine admitted that he is more interested in telling a story. "I'm not a big comic book fan.. I'm a fan of stories," he gushed. "So if there's a story to be told, I love to tell a good story. But there's not a particular superhero or comic book character that I'd like to play."

In mid-March, Chris Pine has been reported by IESB to be included in Warner Bros. short list for the Hal Jordan role. Latino Review then took the story to another level mentioning that the actor has been given a special offer for the part. Soon after, however, Collider came with a conflicting report claiming that those reports are "just NOT true".

"Green Lantern" itself will tell the story of Hal Jordan, an ordinary test pilot who is suddenly given the task by dying alien named Abin Sur to protect the space using a green energy-powered ring. The movie scripted by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green is set to be released in the U.S. on December 17, 2010.

Katrina 'Bikini Girl' Darrell "American Idol"

Katrina "Bikini Girl" Darrell — the 20-year-old model who auditioned for "American Idol" in her bikini and made it to Hollywood Week — is stirring controversy.

After Darrell made it through the first round of Hollywood Week last night, which in the past, was no easy feat and separated the mediocre from the great, an "Idol" expert from the smash entertainment program MTV said he’s questioning the producers’ judgment on season 8.

"As an ‘Idol’ fan, I was more angry about those two fools [Darrell and comedian Nick "Norman Gentle" Mitchel] hogging more screen time, when contestants I actually cared about were cut," said resident MTV News "Idol" expert Jim Cantiello. "Hollywood Week is supposed to be ‘Idol’ fans’ gift, after a month of shticky auditions. We watch the audition episodes for the comedy. We watch Hollywood Week for the nail-biting, hair-pulling drama. It’s disappointing that producers got it wrong this year."

Darrell, who we first met in January when she sang Mariah Carey "Vision of Love" in a itsy-bitsy bikini and high heels, is also causing debate among the judges. During the Hollywood round, the new judge Kara DioGuardi said she hated Darrell’s rendition of Faith Hill’s "Breathe" in the end. Cowell made a cat claw motion (with animal sounds) and DioGuardi fired back: "Bring your pole tomorrow." Katrina advanced to the next round.

It’s obvious that sex sells …
